GlobalSOMA – Diversity Speaks: Emmebeth

In this episode of GlobalSOMA’s podcast series – Diversity Speaks – we talk to Emmebeth, a Maplewood resident who grew up in a boarding school and orphanage in Ethiopia and found a place for her family here in our community. Emmebeth founded the organization Ethiopia’s Tomorrow, which provides resources to orphanages in Africa.

On May 4, 2013, 5-9 p.m. at Morrow Memorial Church (600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood), Ethiopia’s Tomorrow is having a fundraiser to support its efforts.  Be there and show your support!

GlobalSOMA Launches “Diversity Speaks”

As part of GlobalSOMA’s Outreach mission, we are launching a new podcast series called “Diversity Speaks” in which local residents speak, in their own words, about the experience of living in the truly global community of South Orange and Maplewood, New Jersey.

In the first episode of the series, GlobalSOMA Trustee Sangeeta talks in very personal terms about how her Indian-American family chose to make a home in Maplewood.  Take a listen and tell us what you think.

Summer Camps for the Global Child

Summer 2013 is approaching and many parents are asking — what kinds of summer camp opportunities exist for the globally-minded child in our community?

Here are three you may not know about.

(1)  The Global Arts Day Camp @ South Mountain YMCA
This day camp for young learners (K-2) focuses on one particular culture for each session.  This year the focus countries are Turkey, Brazil and Kenya.  Children explore these cultures through music, dance, crafts, arts and games.  The camp is located at Temple Sharey Tefilo, and is an affordable option at $855 for each three week session.  To learn more, click here.

(2)  iD Tech Camps @ Seton Hall University
Offered at Seton Hall University in South Orange, InternalDrive Tech Camp is one of the World’s top global science and technology camps for children.  iD Tech Camps offer an array of day and overnight camps for children ages 7 – 17.  The camp offers cutting edges courses in programming, app development, and game design, mixed in with off-computer games and sports.  Check out the camp’s introductory video.

(3)  Global Leadership Adventures
The Global Leadership Adventures (GLA) program is not based in New Jersey, but offers opportunities for high school students, ages 15 – 18, to travel abroad for service and volunteer-oriented learning in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.  This year, for example, GLA, is offering a service program in India, where participants tackle issues of sustainability and organize a camp for children.  The tuition cost varies by program.  To learn more, check out the video below.

Connect with GlobalSOMA & Piast Meats

On October 15, 2011, GlobalSOMA hosted a tasting event with Piast Meats & Provisions, which was founded twenty years ago on Springfield Avenue by two Polish immigrants. The founders’ son (and now partner), Martin Rybak, attended the event where he gave a presentation about Polish cuisine and Piast’s business. Attendees were treated with delicious pierogi, kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, and other fine fare.

At the event, GlobalSOMA Trustee, Andrew Lee, also spoke about the organization and what it planned to bring to Maplewood and South Orange. Several notable people attended, including Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca and Maplewood Township Committee member Jerry Ryan. Anthony Ewing of Ethnic New Jersey was also in attendance.

All in all it was an educational and enjoyable event that celebrated and highlighted the international and global character of the towns.
