Film Screening: “Please Vote for Me”

Please Vote For Me

On Saturday, October 27, 2012, at 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. at Maplewood Memorial Library, GlobalSOMA will present a free public screening of the award-winning film by Weijun Chen, PLEASE VOTE FOR ME, which documents a competition among Chinese schoolchildren for the position of class monitor in the first school election of its kind held in China.  The film asks us to consider a number of questions: Can Democracy come to China?  Does Democracy work in a classroom?  Are there any parallels to our experience in the United States?

After the film, there will be a short presentation by GlobalSOMA and an opportunity to discuss the issues raised by the film.  Come and join us for an afternoon of film and stimulating conversation about Democracy here and abroad.

Teens Read to Kids – Global Edition

Maplewood Library (photo by Jim Hendersen)

GlobalSOMA is proud to host “Teens Read to Kids – Global Edition” in conjunction with Maplewood Memorial Library.

In this initiative, local teens are trained by library staff and GlobalSOMA representatives on how to read to young kids and encourage them to think about different places and cultures around the world. Teens read various short stories to the younger children.  The stories introduce children to places, customs, foods and people from different parts of the globe.

At the first session on July 2, 2012, there were approximately 25 people in attendance including the teens, kids and parents/care-givers.    A second session was held on July 16th and focused on the Chinese folk tale “The Empty Pot.”

For more information on the event, visit the Maplewood Memorial Library website.

GlobalSOMA files for 501(c)(3) Status

After months of meetings and planning, GlobalSOMA has filed for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status as a charitable organization.  After our application has been processed, we will focus on raising funds to complete various initiatives.

This is a big milestone for the organization, and one that we hope will catapult us forward in our mission of furthering the global suburbs vision for Maplewood and South Orange, New Jersey.

Connect with GlobalSOMA & Piast Meats

Piast1

On October 15, 2011, GlobalSOMA hosted a tasting event with Piast Meats & Provisions, which was founded twenty years ago on Springfield Avenue by two Polish immigrants. The founders’ son (and now partner), Martin Rybak, attended the event where he gave a presentation about Polish cuisine and Piast’s business. Attendees were treated with delicious pierogi, kielbasa, stuffed cabbage, potato pancakes, and other fine fare.

At the event, GlobalSOMA Trustee, Andrew Lee, also spoke about the organization and what it planned to bring to Maplewood and South Orange. Several notable people attended, including Maplewood Mayor Vic DeLuca and Maplewood Township Committee member Jerry Ryan. Anthony Ewing of Ethnic New Jersey was also in attendance.

All in all it was an educational and enjoyable event that celebrated and highlighted the international and global character of the towns.

GlobalSOMA Book Group : “Trapped”

Trapped

On October 16, 2011, we launched the GlobalSOMA Book Group for parents and children in the SOMA community at Words Bookstore with Trapped by Marc Aronson. Trapped is the compelling story of how the world rescued 33 miners from 2,000 feet below the Chilean desert.

Marc Aronson is an author, historian, and speaker whose works inspire and speak to pre-teens and young adults about the world we live in. Trapped is the first selection in the GlobalSOMA Book Group.
